UPSIDE DOWN?
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR LOAN BALANCE IS
GREATER THAN YOUR BOAT VALUE

"Prices for used boats are declining in nearly every geographic market."
according to Ed McKnew, Editor of the PowerBoat Guide. "Thanks to a
slumping economy, the used-boat inventory exceeds anything we've seen in
the recent past…"
In times of slow market conditions, it is commonplace to see boat values
dip below loan balances or become "upside down". Unfortunately, sellers are
sometimes reluctant to come to grips with this painful fact and end up costing
themselves a lot of money. Boat owners tend to adopt a home owners
attitude that the problem will correct itself. BEWARE! Boats even under the
best of conditions are depreciating assets. A seller may lose a bundle in
depreciation, insurance, storage costs, marina costs and maintenance while
trying to sell a boat at an unrealistic price because of a high loan balance.
So what’s a seller to do? The good news is that there are options for most
sellers that will raise the necessary deficit capital. Other assets can be used
as a tool to solve this problem and possibly with more favorable terms. It is
always better to stop the bleeding early.
The Mariners’ Group has counselors that can suggest options to ease the
financial burden of selling an "upside down" boat. They can be reached at
800-554-8633 or at www.mymarinersgroup.com.
